The Executive Secretary, Benue State Emergency Management Agency, Sir James Aondoakaa Iorpuu on Thursday, led a delegation from PLAN International to Logo Local Government Area of the state for needs assessment at the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camps of Ugba and Anyiin.
Addressing the IDPs separately during their tour of the two camps visited, Sir James Aondoakaa Iorpuu thanked the IDPs for keeping faith with the Governor of Benue State, Rev’d Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, assuring them of a better welfare.
Represented by the Programme Manager, IDPs operations, Mr. James Iorhuna, the SEMA Boss assured the persons of concern of Governor Alia’s relentless efforts in restoring peace in the state even as he said the governor is working round the clock to cater for their general wellbeing and resettle them in their ancestral communities.
Relatedly, the Adviser to the Governor on Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, Mrs Mimi Kadev encouraged the Persons of Concern to remain focused in the face of their challenges, expressing the Governor’s strong commitment to return them to their ancestral homes and provide adequate security to guarantee their safety.
The Special Adviser also urged parents to send their children to schools operating within the camps for literacy purpose.
Speaking at the Anyiin camp, the team lead of Plan International, Mr. Avindigh Alagh explained that the rationale behind their visit to the camps was for scoping mission (Needs Assessment) to the humanitarian situation in the State to possibly propose an intervention in core thematic areas of Protection (Child protection and Gender Based Violence), Education, Nutrition and Livelihood.
In a statement by the Information Officer, Terms Ager, some of the IDPs who spoke at the event, noted some of their challenges which include; lack of shelter, inadequate food and their wish to return to their villages.
