Chairman Senate Committee on Army, Senator Abdul’aziz Musa Yar’adua (rtd) has said that, curbing of internal security in the country
is the work of the Nigeria Police and other security agencies but not the Nigerian Armed Forces.
Lieutenant Colonel Musa Yar’adua who is serving as the Senator representing Katsina Central Senatorial Zone expressed
concern over the involvement of soldiers in curbing kidnapping and banditry which primarily was not its assignment.
Senator Yar’adua recalled that, from 2011 to date, the Army has been involved in internal security situation which was not their primary mandate.
“The primary role of the Nigerian Armed Forces is to defend the territorial integrity of Nigeria while the internal security remains as its secondary role,” he emphasized.
He said, “pursuing kidnappers and armed robbers is an essential training given to Police but not Armed forces, and as an ex-Military officer, I’ve never been trained to pursue kidnappers and armed robbers.it is the duties of the Police to address it but not armed forces.
“You can see that the armed forces have been on the issue of internal security for over 13 years today, and this undermines the capacity of the Police in policing the nation,” he noted.
Senator Abdul’Aziz Musa Yar’adua charged the Inspector General of Police to rebrand the Nigeria Police by bringing back Nigeria Mobile Police Force into lime light and create special forces meant for rescuing kidnapped victims.
