Senator representing Anambra South Senatorial District of Anambra State, Ifeanyi Ubah said the implementation of the South East Development Commission programme would douse the ill-feelings of marginalisation in the geo-political zone.
In a statement yesterday Ubah commended the National Assembly for speedily passing the South East Development Bill and expressed great optimism that the bill would address the developmental challenges in the region.
He emphasised the need for the implementation of the targeted intervention as captured in the bill so as to promote economic growth, infrastructure development and social welfare of the people of the region as soon as the bill received the assent of President Bola Tinubu.
The federal lawmaker, who was full of gratitude to his colleagues in the Senate and House of Representatives for giving the bill accelerated hearing and passage immediately he introduced it in the National Assembly.
He said, “On Tuesday March 5, 2024, at the floor of the Nigerian Senate, I relied on Order 42 of the Senate Standing Rules to appreciate the upper chamber for passing the South East Development Commission Bill which I introduced to the present 10th Senate after which it passed First Reading on Wednesday, October 4, 2023 as SB.129.
“I further commended the Senate for working tirelessly to ensure that the Bill process was not discontinued after its First Reading and for diligently working to ensure its passage”, he stated further.
Speaking further on the importance of the Bill, Ubah reiterated that when signed into law, it would not only put the perceived marginalisation of the South East to an end but would enable the zone benefit directly from federal government intervention programmes which are already being enjoyed by other zones like the South South and North East through the Niger Delta Development Commission and North East Development Commission respectively.
He stated that the federal government was committed to the development of various regions of the country, adding that he was confident that the Senate would prioritise the implementation of the Bill when signed into law and would also ensure that the Commission was effectively established and empowered to fulfil its mandate.
The senator re-emphasised his commitment to work towards the development and prosperity of his Senatorial District, South East region and the country as a whole is sacrosanct.
He also pledged that he would always put in his best to ensure that the interests of the region were always protected.
