*Helping to build inclusive society – NUJ President

As the world celebrated International Women’s Day (IWD) on Friday, the Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno has described the women in the state as very resourceful people, whose roles have helped in accelerating the development of the state.
In a goodwill message to the women of Akwa Ibom on the occasion of the 2024 International Women’s Day, Eno commended Akwa Ibom women for their exploits and accomplishments in every area of human life.
A message issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Ekerette Udoh, reads in part, “let me on behalf of the government and people of Akwa Ibom State congratulate our resourceful women on the occasion of the 2024 International Women’s Day.
“The theme of this year’s celebration: Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress”, couldn’t have been more apt.
“Margaret Thatcher, the late former British Prime Minister illustrated succinctly the role women play when she famously stated that “ if you want something said, ask a man; if you want something done, ask a woman.
“The wonderful women of Akwa Ibom State, have done great things- from managing our homes, making huge strides in both private and public sectors and being in the vanguard of pushing morality in our society.” The statement said.
The governor maintained that investing in the girl-child has continued to benefit the society and assured of the support of his administration to prepare the girl child and women for emerging opportunities and running a gender friendly government.
“Investing in the girl child, is guaranteed to bear great rewards for our society, as Margaret Thatcher aptly stated. We will continue to support this great effort and prepare our women for the opportunities tomorrow may offer.
“We will continue to run a gender- inclusive government as currently reflected in our State Exco, the Transition committees, membership of Boards and other extra Ministerial Departments, among others.I wish our women a happy 2024 International Women’s Day!.” The statement concluded.
On his part, the National President of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Dr Chris Isiguzo in a release he signed and made available to journalists, lauded Nigerian women for their resilience, dedication, and remarkable achievements made across all spheres of life.
“From the boardrooms to the newsrooms, from the corridors of power to the heart of our communities, Nigerian women have been at the forefront of driving progress, promoting inclusivity, and shaping the destiny of our nation”. Dr isiguzo stated.
Noting the theme of this year’s celebration: “Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress” NUJ National President paid special tribute to the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) led by Hajia Aisha Ibrahim.
He explained that NAWOJ embodied the spirit of empowerment, advocacy, and excellence in journalism, championing the rights of women journalists and amplifying their voices in the media landscape.
According to him, the leadership of Association in the country through their relentless efforts, has not only shattered glass ceilings but has also paved the way for greater gender equality and diversity within the media industry.
“Under successive leaderships, NAWOJ has been a beacon of inspiration, driving initiatives that promote gender-sensitive reporting, advocate for women’s rights, and empower women journalists to excel in their profession. Their commitment to excellence, professionalism, and inclusivity has earned them the admiration and respect of their peers and colleagues across the country.
“Beyond the realm of journalism, Nigerian women continue to make indelible contributions to nation-building, community development, and social progress. They are entrepreneurs, educators, activists, and leaders, breaking barriers, challenging stereotypes, and transforming lives with their passion, resilience, and unwavering determination.
“On this day, let us celebrate the achievements of NAWOJ and its leadership, while also honouring the countless Nigerian women who inspire inclusion through their actions, their words, and their commitment to making a difference. Let us recognise their contributions to nation-building, their resilience in the face of adversity, and their tireless efforts to create a more inclusive and equitable society for all.” The NUJ National President added.
