The Federal University of Health Sciences Otukpo (FUHSO) is on a ground breaking research to unlock the secrets of Lassa Fever, New Nigerian reports.
New Nigerian gathered that with the support of Tetfund’s mega grant, FUHSO’s Center for Infectious Disease Research and Management is spearheading a comprehensive study on Lassa fever across the North-Central region.
According to the Nigeria Centre For Disease Control (NCDC), 5,295 suspected cases, 806 confirmed cases and 150 deaths due to Lassa Fever have been recorded as at March 31, 2024.
FUHSO’s Principal Investigator, Prof. Stephen Abah, says Lassa fever, a viral hemorrhagic disease, is endemic in Nigeria and has long plagued communities in virtually all states of the Federation, posing a significant challenge to public health.
He said that FUHSO’s initiative seeks to unravel the mysteries surrounding the incidence, zero prevalence, risk factors, and transmission dynamics.
Meanwhile, the FUHSO Vice Chancellor, Prof. Innocent Ujah, mni, OON, has expressed profound appreciation to Tetfund for their unwavering support and belief in the mission of FUHSO.
He said the research opportunity and funding provided by Tetfund is instrumental in advancing FUHSO’s vital research efforts.
