Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State has said that one of the major problems bedeviling the country is rampant breach of constituted law of the land and disobedience to spelt out rules and regulations by constituted authorities.
He added also that lack of commitment to good governance by leaders and their followers is in form of corruption, another issue afflicting Nigeria as a nation drawing the country backward resulting to swindling national economy.
The governor who stated this at the close of the 10th Annual Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Lecture in Maiduguri noted that informed the killing of Sir Ahmadu Bello, the Sardauna of Sokoto in the Nigeria’s first military coup d’etat of January 15, 1966 who was born on June 12, 1910 and served as the first and only Premier of the defunct Northern Region from 1954 until he was assassinated in 1966.
“One of the major problems in Nigeria is lack of obedience to rules and regulations.We will never get it right until we follow the rules and regulations. During Sardauna’s time, there was obedience to rules and regulations,” Zulum said.
He further spoke on the negative and consequential effects of corruption , pointing out that unless Nigerians change their attitudes to discipline and good governance, it will not get things right as long as corruption will thrive.
Zulum also said that there is the need for Nigerian leaders and their followers to collectively embrace the fight against corruption by abiding with rules and regulations spelt out by the constituted authorities for good governance s
He however, said that it is never too late for a change and there is hope for recovery and change of the not lost glory if Nigerians will renew their commitments in doing things in line with the theme of the lecture:, “ Creating pathways for peace: Tackling banditry and insurgency through good governance for sustainable development.’’
The governor added that his administration’s commitment to good governance by focusing on security and executing vital projects in various sectors, and fulfilling campaign promises, remained a resolute towards strengthening the resilience of the people.
“These developments demonstrated our achievements through good governance and understanding of our multifaceted approach to curb banditry and insurgency.
“Security situation in Borno has consequently improved by 95 per cent and by the grace of God before the end of my administration Borno will be rid of insurgency,’’ Zulum said.
Highlights of the event include presentation of Lifetime Achievement Awards to distinguished personalities and the handing over of the symbolic flag of the foundation to the northern state that will host the next lecture to Bauchi State and group photographs among others.
