With the legalisation of same sex marriages in several European countries, the aggravated incidences of “LGBTQ” among youth in Nigeria are becoming disturbing and promoting negative influences across the nation.
Out investigations showed that in spite of the upsurge in the arrest and prosecution of offenders, the trend is becoming alarming.
Recently, a Clergyman of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Elder Bernard while addressing a press conference organized by the church in Lagos, disclosed that the church does not discriminate against same sex relationship as it counsels and encourages its members to show love and respect to people of same sex relationships.
In a concerted effort to further establish these incidences of same sex affairs, investigations across Police Stations revealed that reported and prosecuted cases and the revelation was very disturbing, worrisome and heart breaking.
A former students union leader in one of the universities in Lagos, Balogun lsiaq Olatunji was in 2019, cautioned by the institution after investigations revealed and confirmed that he was a member of a same sex group in the university and was attacked, brutalised by a group of students who he alleged, were cultists before being admitted in a hospital for severe bruises and trauma.
The institution it was gathered, warned him that further reports of his engagement in the shameful act will henceforth be severely dealt with.
Also, the case of a female student at a university in Ekiti State, Deborah Peter Okon who was rusticated in March 2020 over illicit same sex relationship as a special investigative committee confirmed that she was vividly captured along with another female student in the institution’s Botanical Garden while engaging in the act, which they confessed to and pleaded for leniency.
The female students were subsequently handed over to the law enforcement agency for further interrogation and prosecution. They were later released on bail by the Police, pending prosecution in the court.
In May 2023, Edem Peter Otuekpo was invited for interrogation by the Police in Benin City, Edo State, over similar cases of same sex affairs as he was identified as one of culprits when a team of Police detective at about 1am stormed a birthday party held at RAVE Night Club by some friends which he participated but escaped arrest.
According to the police sources, one of those arrested indicted Edem Peter Otuekpo as a prime suspect, while the CCTV Camera at the scene of the crime captured him in a compromising and unbecoming act with another accomplice.
