Nasarawa State Government has declared all ethnic vigilante groups and other similar organisations in the state as unlawful societies and issued an executive order to proscribe them.
A statement from Government House Lafia said governor Abdullahi Sule took the drastic decision based on the advice of the State Security Council.
The groups affected are Kungiyar Zaman Lafiya Nomad Group, Bassa Vigilante, Eggon Vigilante and other ethnic group, association, movement, organization or society affiliated with the group operating under the guise of Vigilante.
The similar organisations include any association, movement or group of persons or society in whatever name called or form, with the aim and objectives of providing security amongst ethnic group within Nasarawa State through the use of form or arms.
The Proscription order dated April 15 and issued by Governor Sule in exercise of the powers conferred on him by Section 97A of the penal code noted the groups are dangerous to good governance in the state.
The affected groups were therefore directed to hand over all weapons or arms in their possession along with their uniform to the state Commissioner of Police within two weeks.
New Nigerian recalls that controversies had brewed up in the state following the estsblishment of Miyetti Allah Vigilantte group and subsequent arrest of the miyetti Allah’s president Alhaji Bodejo early this year.
Other issues that the matter to the head was the recent confession by Bodejo, indicting Governor Sule as brain behind the Fulani vigilante group.
Though statements from Government House Lafia and Bodejo’s lawyers countered the confession, the general public is not blindfolded by such crocodile tears.
